Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma announced that there would be a significant change in the education system in Assam.
This change in the education system in Assam will be done based on the country’s new education policy. The decision was taken at the Assam government cabinet meeting held in Bongaigaon on 24th November 2021
As per the decision of the cabinet meeting, school education in Assam will be as per the 5+3+3+4 system. The system will bring the current primary classes (upper kg, lover kg, nursery), first-class and second class all in one. This level will be renamed as ‘Foundation’ or ‘Foundation School.’
The 3 years of classes III, IV, V will be called ‘Preparatory’ or ‘Preparation Period.’ These categories will be the sixth, seventh and eighth years as part of the new system. The cabinet has also decided to change the current syllabus of class V.
The current 3 years of class VI, VII, and VIII will be classified as ‘Middle Class.’ 4 years of class 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th will be classified as higher secondary or senior secondary.
The Chief Minister also announced at the cabinet meeting that Assam higher secondary education council and Assam secondary education council would be merged from the current academic year.
