Barbados becomes the World’s newest republic

 

Island country Barbados has become the World’s newest republic. Barbados was a British colony nearly 400 years. On 30th November 2021 the Caribbean nation officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as the head of the state in a ceremony attended by Prince Charles.

New and first President of Barbados:

Dame Sandra Prunella Mason became the first President of Barbados. She was selected as the President in last month in a joint meeting of both house of Parliament of Barbados., Speaker of the the House of Assembly Arthur Holder.

Dame Sandra Prunella Mason is a politician, lawyer, and diplomat of the island. She served as the eighth and final Governor-General of Barbados from 2018 to 2021.

Where is Barbados?

Barbados is an island country in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is in the in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas, and the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. The capital and largest city of Barbados is Bridgetown.

When Barbados became a British colony?

Barbados became a British colony when a ship arrived at the Caribbean on 14 May 1625, was captained by John Powell. The first settlement began on 17 February 1627, near Jamestown (Now it is known as Holetown) by a group led by John Powell’s younger brother, Henry, consisting of 80 settlers and 10 English indentured labourers. Barbados gained its independence on November 30, 1966.
